A blocked toilet is the most common household emergency — and one of the most awkward. The good news: in many cases the blockage sits in the toilet's trap and clears in minutes, without harsh chemicals. This guide explains how to work out where the blockage is, which methods to try and in what order, what not to do, and when it makes more sense to call a plumber — « plombier » in French, « bloumbi » (بلومبي) in Darija. It is useful whether you live in Morocco full time or manage a holiday home from abroad.
First, stop flushing
Flushing again and again almost always makes things worse: the bowl overflows and dirty water spreads across the floor. If the water level is rising, close the stop valve on the cistern supply (usually behind or beside the toilet) or lift the float.
- Protect the floor with old towels or newspaper
- Wear gloves and ventilate the room
- Bail out some water if the bowl is full so you can work
Where is the blockage?
Before picking a method, check whether only the toilet is affected or the whole home.
- Only the toilet is blocked and the sink and shower drain normally: the blockage is probably in or just past the trap. You can try fixing it yourself
- Water comes up in the shower or floor drain when you flush: the blockage is further along, in the shared drain. Time to call a plumber
- Several flats in the building are affected, or sewage backs up on the ground floor: it is likely the building's main stack or the sewer connection. Tell the syndic (building management)
- In a villa or an area not connected to the sewer: a full septic tank (fosse septique) can cause the same symptoms
Methods to try, in order
Start with the gentlest option. These methods work on Western-style toilets and on squat toilets (« toilettes à la turque »), which are still common in Morocco.
- Washing-up liquid and hot water: pour in a good squirt of washing-up liquid, then a bucket of hot (not boiling, to avoid cracking the ceramic) water from a little height. Wait 15–20 minutes
- Plunger: seal it over the outlet, covered with water, and push and pull firmly. This is the most effective method for a blockage in the trap
- Baking soda and white vinegar: can help with a small organic blockage, useless against wet wipes or objects
- Hand drain snake (« furet »): turn it gently into the trap to hook or break up the blockage. Choose a sheathed model so it doesn't scratch the glaze
- If something fell in (a toy, a phone, a bottle cap), don't push it further: try to retrieve it with gloves, otherwise call a professional
Mistakes to avoid
Some very common habits damage pipes or are dangerous.
- Don't pour hydrochloric acid (sold in Morocco as « lma l9ate3 », الما القاطع) or pure caustic soda: toxic fumes, burn risk and damage to PVC pipes
- Never mix bleach and acid
- Don't use a wire hanger or rigid metal rod: you can scratch or crack the bowl
- Don't flush wet wipes, sanitary pads, nappies, cotton or food scraps: these cause most blockages — worth telling guests and tenants too
- If you have a macerator toilet (sanibroyeur), unplug it before doing anything and avoid harsh products
When to call a plumber and what it costs
Call a plumber if the plunger and snake haven't worked, if water backs up elsewhere, if the problem keeps coming back, or if an object is stuck. A plumber has an electric drain snake, sometimes an inspection camera, and can remove the toilet if needed. For heavily clogged pipes, they may suggest high-pressure water jetting (hydrocurage).
There is no single price in Morocco: it depends on access, equipment, time of day and city. As a benchmark, a 2026 survey puts a qualified plumber's day rate at roughly 300–550 MAD, with surcharges in the evening, on Sundays and public holidays. Ask for the price before work starts.
- Recurring problem: have the drain slope and the trap checked
- Older buildings: scaled-up old pipes narrow the flow, so blockages happen more often
- Water cuts: a cistern that refills poorly doesn't flush with enough force
Find a plumber with AloAji
On aloaji.ma, search for « Plombier » in your city and contact the tradesperson directly by phone or WhatsApp. It is free, with no middleman. Read reviews and describe the problem clearly (toilet only or whole home, since when) to get a more accurate price.
Some profiles are marked « Non vérifié » (not verified). These are businesses we found through their own website and have not checked yet. Always ask for a clear price before the call-out.
FAQ
How do I unblock a toilet without a plunger?
Try washing-up liquid followed by a bucket of hot (not boiling) water poured from a little height, then wait 15–20 minutes. A plastic bag stretched tightly over the bowl can also create pressure when you flush, but protect the floor.
Do baking soda and vinegar work?
For a small paper or organic blockage, they can help. Against wet wipes, sanitary products or objects, they won't: you need a plunger, a drain snake or a plumber.
Can I use acid to unblock a toilet?
It's not recommended: hydrochloric acid gives off toxic fumes, can burn your skin and damages pipes. Mixed with bleach, it becomes dangerous.
My toilet and shower are blocked at the same time — what now?
The blockage is probably in the shared drain. Stop using water and call a plumber. In a building, also tell the syndic if neighbours are affected.
How much does unblocking a toilet cost in Morocco?
There's no fixed price: it depends on access, equipment and timing. As a guide, a qualified plumber's day rate is around 300–550 MAD according to a 2026 survey. Ask for the price before they start.
