In Morocco the word menuisier covers two quite different trades: the woodworker who makes doors, kitchens, wardrobes and carved cedar ceilings, and the aluminium joiner who makes windows, sliding doors and shower screens. Both are in high demand in renovations. This guide helps you find the right one for your project and understand what drives the price.

Wood or aluminium: who to call

For wood, ask for a menuisier bois. In Darija a carpenter is a نجار ("nejjar"), the same word as in Modern Standard Arabic. For aluminium windows and doors, ask for a menuisier aluminium, often called مول الألومينيوم ("mol l-aluminyom"), "the aluminium guy". Some workshops also do PVC.

Useful French words: porte (door), fenêtre (window), placard (built-in wardrobe), cuisine (kitchen), coulissant (sliding), double vitrage (double glazing), volet (shutter) and bois de cèdre (cedar wood). Traditional carved and painted wood is a specialised craft, so ask for photos of previous work.

Indicative prices in Morocco

Aluminium windows are usually priced per square metre. A 2026 Moroccan guide gives about 900 to 1,350 MAD per m² installed for entry-level aluminium, and 1,150 to 1,800 MAD per m² installed for mid-range windows with a thermal break and standard double glazing, excluding VAT. Many advertised prices are for the material only, so compare quotes that include installation.

For wood, another 2026 guide puts a fitted interior door at roughly 700 to 1,800 MAD, and a custom kitchen at about 3,000 to 8,000 MAD per linear metre. Solid cedar, carved work and hand-painted finishes cost considerably more. The type of wood, the hardware and the finish make the biggest difference.

What to check in a joinery quote

Joinery is made to measure, so mistakes are expensive. The joiner should come and measure on site, not work from your rough numbers.

Climate tips for doors and windows

In coastal cities such as Agadir, Essaouira, El Jadida, Dakhla or Tangier, salt air attacks cheap aluminium and fittings, and humidity makes poorly dried wood swell. In Marrakech or Fès, intense summer heat makes good glazing and seals worth the investment. Ask your joiner what they recommend for your exposure and keep wood well varnished or painted.

Working with a joiner from abroad

If you live outside Morocco, ask the joiner to send a drawing or photo of the design with dimensions before production starts, and confirm it in writing on WhatsApp. Ask for a photo of the finished piece in the workshop before delivery, so any change can be made before it is installed.

FAQ

What is a carpenter called in Darija?

A carpenter is a نجار ("nejjar"). For aluminium windows people say مول الألومينيوم ("mol l-aluminyom") or simply menuisier aluminium.

How much do aluminium windows cost per m² in Morocco?

A 2026 Moroccan guide gives about 900 to 1,350 MAD per m² installed for entry-level aluminium and 1,150 to 1,800 MAD for mid-range with thermal break and double glazing, excluding VAT. Prices vary by city and glass type.

How long does it take to make windows or a kitchen?

Made-to-measure joinery usually takes a few weeks between measuring and fitting, depending on the workshop's workload and the material. Ask for a written delivery date.

Is aluminium or wood better for windows in Morocco?

Aluminium needs little maintenance and is the most common choice. Wood suits traditional houses and riads but needs regular care, especially near the sea.

Can a joiner restore an old riad door?

Yes, many traditional carpenters restore cedar doors, but it is specialised work. Ask for photos of restorations they have done before.
