Old wiring, breakers that keep tripping, sockets without earth, a new air conditioner that needs its own line: electrical work is the one job where cutting corners can be dangerous. Whether you own an apartment in Rabat, rent out a riad in Fès or have just bought a villa near Tangier, here is how to find an electrician in Morocco, what the work usually costs and what to check.
The words you need
The usual word is the French électricien. In Darija it is تريسيان ("trisyan"), and in Modern Standard Arabic كهربائي (kahrabai). Useful French terms: disjoncteur (breaker), tableau électrique (fuse board), prise (socket), terre (earth), court-circuit (short circuit), câblage (wiring) and devis (quote).
In Darija, electricity and light are both called الضو ("d-dow"). "Ma kayench d-dow" means "there is no power". Morocco uses 220 V and the same two-pin European plugs as France.
Before calling, check whether the problem is only in your home or in the whole building or street. If the neighbours also have no power, it is a network cut and an electrician cannot fix it.
What electricians usually handle
- Finding the cause of a breaker that trips or a partial power cut
- Replacing a fuse board and adding a differential (RCD) breaker
- Adding sockets, switches and lighting points
- Full or partial rewiring of older apartments and riads
- Dedicated lines for air conditioners, ovens and electric water heaters
- Installing lights, ceiling fans and outdoor lighting
- Earthing checks, especially in bathrooms and kitchens
- Intercoms, doorbells and basic network cabling
Typical electrician prices in Morocco
Electricians often price work per point (each socket, switch or light). Moroccan guides published in 2026 give roughly 110 to 320 MAD per new point including basic supplies, with a minimum call-out of around 300 MAD. A simple repair is often quoted between 150 and 400 MAD depending on the diagnosis.
For bigger jobs, a new fuse board is commonly quoted at 1,500 to 3,000 MAD, and bringing an 80 m² apartment up to standard at around 8,000 to 15,000 MAD. Casablanca and Rabat tend to be the most expensive, while smaller towns are cheaper. Treat these figures as a starting point, and always compare written quotes.
Safety first: what to check
Electrical work in Morocco is often done by experienced tradesmen trained on the job rather than certified installers, so the quality varies. You do not need to be an expert to spot the basics.
- Ask whether the board will have a 30 mA differential breaker protecting the circuits
- Check that bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor sockets are earthed
- Make sure cables are inside conduits, not buried directly in plaster
- Ask for the cable section for heavy loads such as AC units and ovens
- Ask the electrician to label the breakers in the board
- Never accept bare wires, taped joins or sockets loose in the wall
How AloAji helps
On aloaji.ma, choose "Électricien" and your city, such as Casablanca, Marrakech or Tangier, to see electricians who work near you. You call or WhatsApp them directly, free of charge, and you can read reviews from previous clients. Profiles marked "Non vérifié" come from the business's own website and have not yet been checked by AloAji, so ask a few questions before you book.
A good first message: a photo of the board, a short description of the problem, your neighbourhood and when you are available.
FAQ
What is electrician in Darija?
Electrician is تريسيان ("trisyan") in Darija, from the French électricien. In Modern Standard Arabic it is كهربائي.
How much does it cost to add a socket in Morocco?
Moroccan price guides from 2026 give roughly 110 to 320 MAD per new point, including basic supplies, often with a minimum call-out of about 300 MAD. The final price depends on the wall, the distance to the board and the hardware chosen.
My breaker keeps tripping. Is it urgent?
A breaker that trips repeatedly is protecting you from a fault or an overload. Unplug the most powerful appliances and try again. If it still trips, keep that circuit off and call an electrician.
Who do I call if the whole street has no power?
That is a network problem, not your installation. Contact your local electricity distributor; in most regions this is now the regional multi-service company (SRM), which replaced operators like Lydec, Redal or Amendis.
Do I need a permit for rewiring?
Rewiring inside your own home usually does not need a permit, but in an apartment building inform the syndic, especially if work affects shared areas or the meter.
