A new bathroom is one of the most rewarding renovations, and one of the easiest to get wrong. In Morocco a bathroom often involves four or five trades, from the mason and plumber to the tiler or tadelakt specialist. Whether you are updating an apartment in Rabat or creating guest bathrooms in a Marrakech riad, here is how the project usually unfolds and what it can cost.

The trades involved

The usual order of work

The order matters, because each trade covers the work of the previous one. Rushing a step is the main cause of leaks and cracks later.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

Budgets vary enormously. Moroccan guides published in 2026 estimate a complete standard bathroom at around 18,000 to 35,000 MAD including tiles and fixtures, and 35,000 to 70,000 MAD for a premium finish. Another guide gives 4,000 to 10,000 MAD for renovation work without fixtures, which shows how much the choice of materials and the scope affect the total.

For reference, standard tile laying is often quoted at about 80 to 150 MAD per m² labour only, while decorative finishes like tadelakt can cost 80 to 200 MAD per m² for labour. Moving the toilet or shower to a new position costs more than keeping the existing layout, because drains have to be rerouted.

Tadelakt, zellige or tiles?

Tadelakt is a traditional waterproof lime plaster, polished with stones and black soap. It looks beautiful in riads and needs a real specialist and some care: avoid harsh cleaning products. Zellige gives the classic Moroccan look and lasts for decades when laid on a well-prepared base, but it is slower and more expensive to lay. Modern porcelain tiles are the most affordable and easiest to clean, and suit rental properties.

Many owners combine them: porcelain on the floor, zellige as a feature wall, tadelakt in the shower niche. Ask each specialist to show you finished bathrooms, not only photos from the internet.

Finding the right artisans

You can hire one contractor who manages everything, or hire each trade yourself, which is cheaper but needs more coordination. On aloaji.ma you can search plumbers, masons, tilers, electricians and joiners in your city, compare reviews and contact them directly by phone or WhatsApp, free of charge. Profiles marked "Non vérifié" come from the business's own website and have not yet been checked by AloAji, so compare quotes and ask questions.

FAQ

How much does it cost to renovate a bathroom in Morocco?

Moroccan 2026 guides estimate around 18,000 to 35,000 MAD for a complete standard bathroom with tiles and fixtures, and more for premium finishes. Small refreshes cost much less.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A simple renovation often takes two to four weeks, longer with zellige, tadelakt or delays in materials. Ask each trade for a schedule.

Is tadelakt good for a shower?

Yes, when applied by an experienced craftsman and maintained properly. It is traditionally used in hammams. Avoid aggressive cleaning products, which can damage the finish.

Should I hire one contractor or each trade separately?

One contractor is simpler, especially if you live abroad. Hiring each trade can save money, but you have to coordinate the order of work and check each stage.

Do I need a permit to renovate a bathroom?

Usually not for interior work in your own home. In an apartment building, inform the syndic, especially if work affects shared pipes or causes noise.
