Low water pressure at home in Morocco: find the cause and the right fix

A shower that barely runs, a gas water heater that keeps cutting out, a washing machine that takes ages to fill: low water pressure is very common in Morocco, especially on upper floors and during droughts. Before buying a pump, work out where the problem comes from. Sometimes a limescale-clogged tap aerator is the whole story. This guide walks you through a simple diagnosis, step by step, then helps you choose the right fix with a plumber, called plombier in French and bloumbi (بلومبي) in Darija.
First check: the whole home or one tap?
This is the most useful question. Run cold and then hot water from several taps in the kitchen and bathroom.
- One tap or one shower is weak: the problem is local (aerator, hose, cartridge, shower head)
- Only hot water is weak: look at the water heater (limescale, settings, inlet valve)
- The whole home is weak: main valve, meter, leak, old pipes, or a building or network issue
- Weak only at certain times (morning, evening): high demand on the network or an undersized building booster pump
- Neighbours have the same problem: the cause is shared, so do not modify your own system alone
The most common causes in Morocco
Water in Morocco is often hard, and many homes have old installations or ones modified several times.
- Aerators and shower heads clogged with limescale: the simplest and most common cause
- Main valve or under-sink valve left half closed after works
- Galvanised steel pipes rusted inside in older buildings, narrowing over the years
- Hidden leak: pressure drops and the bill rises. Check whether the meter moves when everything is off
- Building booster pump (surpresseur) broken or badly set in multi-storey buildings
- Deliberate pressure reduction by the water utility during water stress
- Home fed by a rooftop tank (citerne): pressure depends only on the tank's height and is often weak on the top floor
What you can check yourself
These checks need no special tools and can save a plumber's visit.
- Unscrew the tap aerator and soak it in white vinegar for a few hours, then rinse
- Do the same with the shower head
- Make sure the main valve and small isolation valves are fully open
- Leak test: turn everything off, note the meter reading, come back one or two hours later without using water
- Ask neighbours on your floor and below whether they have the same issue
In apartment buildings: booster pump and syndic
In multi-storey buildings, public network pressure does not always push water to the top. In Casablanca, the utility reminded residents in 2022 that a booster pump is required for buildings of more than five floors and asked them to make sure it works properly.
If the whole building or the upper floors lack pressure, contact the building manager (syndic). The booster pump, shared tank and rising main are common equipment. Servicing them helps everyone and costs less than a pump in every flat. If you own from abroad, ask your property manager or a relative to raise it at the next meeting.
Your own pump or booster: a good idea?
A small domestic booster (a pump with a pressure controller) can help, especially with a tank or water reserve. But it does not create water: if the network or building does not supply enough flow, the pump runs dry and gets damaged.
- Pumping directly from the mains can lower pressure for neighbours. Check with the utility and the syndic first
- The cleanest setup is often a water tank plus a booster with dry-run protection
- Plan a protected power socket away from water, and a spot where the noise will not disturb anyone
- Prices vary widely by power and brand; ask the plumber to size the pump for your number of taps and floors
When to call a plumber and what it costs
Call a plumber if cleaning the aerators changes nothing, if you suspect a leak, if the pipes are old, or if you want a booster pump. They can measure pressure with a gauge and find where it is lost.
There is no official rate. A construction portal recorded in 2026 a day of a qualified plumber at about 300 to 550 MAD in Casablanca and Rabat, often a little less elsewhere. A small diagnosis is often charged as a flat fee. Replacing pipe sections or fitting a pump is priced on quote (devis).
Find a plumber with AloAji
On aloaji.ma, search for Plombier in your city and contact the craftsman directly by phone or WhatsApp, free and with no middleman. Describe your checks clearly (one tap or the whole home, hot or cold, neighbours affected) so the plumber can estimate better.
Some profiles are marked Non vérifié (not verified): these are businesses found through their own website and not yet checked by AloAji. Read the reviews and ask for a clear price before work starts.
FAQ
Why is only the hot water pressure low?
Most often the water heater or its fittings are scaled up, or the heater's inlet valve is not fully open. A plumber can descale it or check the settings.
Is vinegar enough for a scaled-up tap?
For an aerator or shower head, often yes: a few hours in white vinegar, then rinse. If flow stays weak, the problem is further down the pipes.
Can I fit a pump straight onto the mains?
Not without checking with the utility and the syndic, as it can reduce neighbours' pressure. A tank with a booster is usually the better choice.
Who fixes the building's booster pump?
It is shared equipment, so repairs and servicing usually go through the syndic and are split between owners.
Can a leak lower water pressure?
Yes. If the meter moves while everything is off, there is probably a leak. Have it found quickly, as it also raises your bill.
