Summers in Marrakech, Fès, Meknès or Béni Mellal regularly pass 40°C, and even coastal cities get humid heat waves. For a home, a rental apartment or a riad with guests, good air conditioning is close to essential. Here is what to know before buying and installing AC in Morocco, from the size of the unit to the price of installation and servicing.
The words you need
Air conditioning is la clim or climatisation in French. In Darija people say الكليما ("l-klima"), and an installer is مول الكليما ("mol l-klima") or a climatiseur technician. The Modern Standard Arabic word is تكييف (takyif).
Useful terms: split (wall unit), unité extérieure (outdoor unit), BTU (power rating), inverter, recharge de gaz (gas recharge), entretien (servicing), fuite (leak) and devis (quote).
Choosing the right unit
Most homes in Morocco use wall-mounted split units, one per room. Power is given in BTU: 9,000 and 12,000 BTU units are common for bedrooms and small living rooms, while larger living areas need 18,000 or 24,000 BTU. The right size depends on the room, ceiling height, insulation and sun exposure, so ask the installer to see the room before choosing.
Inverter models cost more but usually use less electricity and run more quietly, which matters if the unit runs for hours each day in summer. Reversible units also heat, which is useful in winter in cities like Fès, Ifrane or Oujda.
If you buy the unit yourself from a shop, check that the price includes the installation kit, and confirm with your installer before buying that the brand is one they know and can find parts for in your city.
What does AC installation cost in Morocco?
Installation labour for a standard single split is commonly quoted at around 400 to 1,500 MAD in Moroccan guides published in 2026. Difficult drilling, long pipe runs or awkward access to the outdoor unit can push it to 1,500 to 2,500 MAD or more. A 12,000 BTU unit supplied and installed is given at roughly 4,200 to 7,000 MAD in Casablanca by one 2026 guide.
Servicing usually costs around 150 to 500 MAD per unit, and a gas recharge around 300 to 1,200 MAD depending on the gas and the amount. Prices vary by city, brand and access, so always compare at least two quotes.
What a good installation quote includes
- Brand, model and exact power in BTU
- Length of copper pipe included, and price per extra metre
- Wall brackets for the outdoor unit and drain for condensation water
- A dedicated electrical line if the existing circuit is not enough
- Vacuuming the lines and testing before commissioning
- Installation guarantee in addition to the manufacturer's warranty
Practical tips for Morocco
- Book in spring: installers are very busy from June to August
- In an apartment, ask the syndic where outdoor units may be placed on the facade
- Near the sea, ask for an outdoor unit with anti-corrosion protection
- Make sure condensation water drains away and does not drip onto neighbours
- Clean filters every few weeks in summer and service the unit once a year
- For a riad, discuss discreet placement of outdoor units on the roof terrace

FAQ
How much does it cost to install a split AC in Morocco?
Moroccan 2026 guides commonly give around 400 to 1,500 MAD for standard installation labour of a single split, more for difficult access or long pipe runs. The unit itself is extra.
What size AC do I need for a bedroom?
A 9,000 or 12,000 BTU unit is common for a bedroom, but sun exposure, insulation and ceiling height matter. Ask the installer to see the room.
How often should AC be serviced?
Clean the filters regularly in summer and have a professional service once a year, ideally in spring before the heat arrives.
What is AC in Darija?
Air conditioning is الكليما ("l-klima"), from the French clim. The installer is often called مول الكليما ("mol l-klima").
My AC blows warm air. What should I do?
Check the filters and the remote mode first. If it still blows warm air, it may need a gas recharge or have a leak. A technician should find the leak before recharging.
