Switching to LED lighting: how much you really save in Morocco

In many Moroccan homes, lights stay on for long evening hours: a living room with a plaster ceiling full of spotlights, the kitchen, the stairwell, the roof terrace. Swapping old bulbs, and above all halogen spots, for LED is one of the easiest ways to cut the electricity bill without changing your habits. Whether you live in Morocco or own a holiday home there, this guide shows how to estimate the saving, how to choose the right bulbs and when to bring in an electrician (« électricien », or « triciane » in Darija).

Why LEDs use so little power

An incandescent bulb turns about 90% of its energy into heat, not light. According to the Energy Star programme, LED lighting produces light up to 90% more efficiently. In practice, an 8 to 9 W LED bulb usually replaces an old 60 W bulb for the same amount of light.

There is another benefit in Morocco's climate: less heat. Twenty 50 W halogen spots running in a living room in summer heat up the very room your air conditioner is trying to cool.

Work out your saving in two minutes

The maths is simple: watts saved × hours of use = energy saved. Then multiply by the price per kWh shown on your bill (ONEE or the local distribution company, depending on the city). Because Morocco's residential tariff rises by consumption bands, using less can also keep you in a cheaper band.

A few sample calculations to adapt to your home:

What does an LED bulb cost in Morocco?

LED bulbs are now cheap. In supermarkets, a 9 W E27 LED bulb was listed in 2026 at roughly MAD 7 to 20 depending on the brand. GU10 spots, LED panels and strips cost more, and prices vary by shop, city and quality.

Be wary of very cheap unbranded bulbs: some flicker, run hot and lose brightness quickly. A few dirhams more buys a bulb that lasts.

Choosing the right LED bulbs

Brightness is now measured in lumens, not watts. Read the box before you buy.

When to call an electrician

Changing an E27 bulb needs no tradesperson. Some jobs, however, are worth an electrician:

Finding an electrician with AloAji

On aloaji.ma, search « Électricien » in your city to see electricians near you. You call them or message them on WhatsApp directly, free and with no commission. Read other clients' reviews. Profiles marked « Non vérifié » (not verified) are businesses found on their own website and not yet checked by AloAji: ask for a written quote and photos of similar jobs.

To compare quotes, send photos of your spots, the bulb base and any transformer: the electrician can then give a more accurate estimate, even if you are abroad.

FAQ

How much can I save by switching to LED in Morocco?

It depends on how many lights you have and how long they are on. Replacing a 60 W bulb with a 9 W LED used 5 hours a day saves close to 8 kWh a month. The biggest gains come from 50 W halogen spots.

Which LED replaces a 60 W bulb?

An LED bulb of about 800 lumens, usually 8 to 9 W. Go by the lumens printed on the box, not the watts.

Why do my LED spots flicker?

Often because of a dimmer or a 12 V transformer designed for halogens. You need dimmable LEDs or a compatible transformer. An electrician can diagnose it.

What light colour suits a living room?

Warm white at 2,700 to 3,000 K feels comfortable. Keep neutral white at 4,000 K for kitchens and bathrooms.

Do I need an electrician to switch to LED?

Not for a simple E27 or E14 bulb. Yes for 12 V spots with transformers, LED strips, outdoor lighting or dimmers.
